The Northwest region is, mostly, a mountainous region with spectacular and really diferent landscapes. A rich legacy of the past, in the way of invaluable indigenous ruins, works of art with the influence of the pre- and post-Hispanic eras, form the special style of the region and the colonial architecture, clearly evident in the buildings and particularly in some churches still in use.
Northwest Region
It stands, to the west, as an elevated plateau (of approximately 3800 metres above sea level), crossed by high mountain ranges, named Puna. In its central part there are gorges (such as the Humahuaca Gorge) of a huge slope and an amazing saline.To the East, we find sierras that barely exceed the 2000 metres, as a transition to the chaqueña plain. There are zones of forests with an important variety of fauna carefully preserved in the national parks.
Going round the Calchaqui Valleys is a great experience because the colonial history, the characteristic adobe architecture, the religious spirit and the folklore of the area, and the discover of one of the most prized winery zones all around the world near Cafayate city.
The Andine circuit, visiting little and special towns like San Antonio de los Cobres, is possible to take it through the Train to the clouds , one of the highest trains in the world, giving you the possibility of enjoying these landscapes in an unparalleled way.
Beatiful and lovely cities like San Miguel de Tucuman or Salta (both capitals of their provinces) have a great infraestructure with estancias, hotels, boutique places to stay and to start the touristic circuits.
